Erie, PA –
On Tuesday May 14th, 2014, employees from Larson Texts, Inc. traveled to Penn State Behrend for Math Options, an outreach program that seeks to expose middle-school-aged women to careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The program is coordinated by Penn State Behrend’s Office of Community and Workforce Programs.
Leslie Soltis, Amy Butler and Katie Monoskey met with interested female students for a workshop on “Creating Math Textbooks: A Puzzling Process.” In the workshop, the young women had the opportunity to put a puzzle together that featured a math book on the front and, once put together, a flow chart of the process that goes into creating a math textbook.
The workshop showcased math careers and how, in each stage of creating a textbook, from checking to see if the answer is correct to creating exercises that go into the book, math is used. The students then had the opportunity to work and create their own exercises, determine which answers were correct, and transpose letters to check for accuracy and wording.
Thank you to Penn State Behrend for having us. We had a fantastic time.
